Chapter 17

Cindy Burns A Bridge

Monday morning

Near the Transient Boat Pier

Vero Beach, Florida

For three and a half days, Cindy had been trapped in the company of her asshole elderly rich uncle, her gold-digging relatives, and her tomcatting boyfriend. By now Cindy wanted to scream, because Uncle Albert showed Cindy no respect.

Suddenly Uncle Albert turned away from paralleling the shore; now the yacht was pointed toward land.

“What’s here?” Uncle James asked.

“We’re here to get fuel and potable water,” Uncle Albert said.

Then Uncle Albert looked directly at Cindy, while raising his voice loud enough for everyone to hear: “We’ll be here only thirty minutes. Don’t make me wait for you.”

Cindy glared at her uncle. “I’m not a child.”

Cindy’s smartphone rang then. It was Colleen Bennett calling from Wheat City.

“Cindy, you have to get back here to the sorority house!” Colleen said. “It’s a mess, and I need your help to straighten everything out.”

“What’s wrong?” Cindy asked.

“What isn’t wrong? Start with Delilah. Now she’s telling everyone she’s Dracula’s granddaughter. She just left for her first Monday class—dressed like a vampire.”

“Maybe it’s just a Romania thing?”

“Then there’s Debra Chin. This morning at breakfast, Debra announced that Jerry the pizza guy convinced her to start blowing winos and homeless guys as a charity project—”

“Fuck?”

“She says, now she likes herself a whole lot better.”

“Jerry the nerd told her that? And she bought it?”

“Totally bought it. The other weird thing about breakfast was that Linda Tanner was gulping down every food she could reach. She told us that Jerry said she shouldn’t diet anymore.”

“Shit, Jerry again?”

“Yeah. I forgot to mention, but Delilah said it was Jerry’s suggestion that she start dressing like a vampire.”

“Jerry is wrecking my sorority! This shit has to stop.”

Colleen said, “And there’s more—”

Cindy said, “I’ll see you soon, believe it!” Cindy ended the call with a stab of a fingertip.

By now the yacht was alongside the pier, and Uncle Albert was just shutting down the engines. Uncle Matt and Uncle James, along with a guy on the pier, were doing stuff with ropes.

Parked on the pier was a fuel-tanker truck; by that truck stood two guys in matching gray coveralls. One guy held the end of the fuel hose in his hand, waiting to attach it to the yacht.

Cindy made a snap decision. She rushed from the deck to the cabin that she shared with Aunt Trudy. Cindy then grabbed her suitcase, opened it, and dropped it onto her bed.

As soon as Cindy could throw all her clothes into her suitcase and could roll her suitcase to the gangplank, she was ready to leave the ship. Fortunately, by now the yacht’s gangplank had been lowered, so she didn’t need to wait any longer. With her purse hanging from her shoulder, Cindy grabbed her suitcase’s handle—

“It seems you want to be disinherited,” Uncle Albert sneered, behind her.

Cindy turned around and eyed everyone. “No, I want to spend no more time around an asshole like you, ditto my gold-digger relatives, likewise my horn-dog boyfriend.”

Cindy’s relatives gasped.
